What I love about SNAFU is how the situation in the episode reflects the real life too. In this episode, Hikigaya and the gang are trying to help a girl, Rumi resolves her problem in summer camp.
Hikigaya has always takes everything to the extreme level. It is the same with the case in this episode. Since he has been a loner himself, he knows what it feels like to be alone, without any friends. However, this is Hikigaya that we are talking about. Someone that does not feel an ounce of sadness despite being alone. Instead, he enjoys his life like that. But, his principle cannot be applied by everyone who has the same problem as his.
"If your problem is due to human relationships, then if you destroy those human relationships, your problem's gone. If everyone's a loner, there won't be war or suffering." - Hikigaya Hachiman
Hikigaya's plan is to break their impression towards each other for good so that there is no need for them to be friends with each other forever. In the situation where they need to choose either to save themselves or save the others by sacrificing their selves, his plan is perfect so that the kids will be able to see the true self of the so called friends. Hikigaya has such a pessimistic mind, so he views things negatively. This can be applied in this situation where he crushes Rumi's perspective of friendship. I absolutely agree with Hikigaya. In the face of horrifying event, we will be able to determine the value of true friend. When people are scare, they either choose to save themselves or stick with the others despite the danger. Hayama on the other hand, disagrees with his take.
The plan turns out differently at the end as Rumi saves the girl by using her camera. She saves them when she points the flash of camera towards Hayama and the others.
In the end, he achieves his goal. Rumi is still a loner while the girls are still friends. For me, it is good that Hikigaya carries out this plan. Rumi is such a good girl and good friend as she saves them. The other girls do not want to accept her into their clique lost a good friend in her. She is not fake as she still saves them despite them shunning her. Rather than having two-face friends, it is better to be on your own. That is my opinion.
