Chapter:
Mango
Her maniac laugh echoed throughout
the big house in the weekend night. The continuous laugh came from a girl in
the school uniform. As if she was humored by something hilarious, she slammed
the table a few times, holding her stomach using one hand while the other was half-covering
her mouth as she tried to stop her laugh. The two women stood not far away from
her had the opposite expression from the eighteen years old girl. Grief filled their
eyes; the fingers wiped droplets of clear water flowed to their cheeks as their
hands were clasped together, supporting each other.
Ten minutes had passed since
the youngest daughter of the family was amused by the presents she was gifted
with. As she had returned late from the school thanks to the preparation for
the upcoming school festival, her usual grin and greetings were accepted
half-heartedly by the maids in the house. The fifty years old woman along with
another maid in her thirties were following since her feet touched the floor of
the house up till she was about to head towards the dining room. Their bodies
were stuck together side by side while moving in front of her, covering her
front view. Their hands pushed her back to the living room as they suggested
her to have dinner in the living room. Gently splitting those two in the
opposite direction, she immediately rushed to the dining room. The curved lips
retracted as she saw the horrendous things they had been trying to hide.
The dining table was occupied
with mango fruits and various mango-based foods such as mango pudding,
mango-flavored yogurt, mango-flavored candy, vanilla cake with mango cream
frosting and fresh mango slices. They were neatly arranged on the table with
each food was presented in different quantity. As her eyes were eyeing the
foods in the table, they caught a card was situated in the middle of the food.
“Sorry for breaking the
promise. “
The crushing pain in her
heart was getting worse after reading the message. Their gifts did not reflect the
message at all. Out of the fruits in this world, they chose mango for her. That
choice was a total disappointment for her. Her breathe became heavier, the
oxygen failed to reach her heart, sorrow were attacking all sides of her heart.
“They are really good in
making jokes, right? They gave me mango products.”
Turning her head to the left,
she questioned the gray hair women with a soft smile. No response was given to
her. All the things on the table were from her beloved family members; her
father, her mother, and her older siblings, her brother and his twin sister.
They were presents to soothe her anger as they did not attend the Fall Festival
yesterday. She waited for two hours in vain before the driver called her to
inform her about their conflicted appointment. She inhaled the air around her
to calm herself.
“Mango, mango pudding, mango
jelly, mango cake…”
It was as soon as she finished
counted the foods on the table while her eyes read the letters in the card she
received, she laughed like crazy for ten minutes. As silence enveloped the
house except for her laugh, the sound gradually die down. Her body was still
facing the table. Stretching her mouth, taking a deep breath, she turned her
body around to face the two employees.
“I have an order for both of
you.”
The twinkle in her eyes was
dimmed despite the face was decorated by a smile.
“What is it, Haruhi Ojou-sama?”
“Finish all of them for me.”
“Alright.”
She excused herself once she told them that she did not need her dinner tonight. She staggered all the way to her room on the second floor. Once the door was closed, her feet trudged to the queen-size bed. Her slim body plopped onto the soft mattress. The whirlwind of emotions that she withheld in front of the maids were bared without any restrictions. Droplets of water gathered at the corner of her amber eyes dropped uncontrollably. Both of her hands tightly gripped the bed sheet as her head was buried on the bed. Her teeth sank into her lower lips as she was holding her mouth from opening and bawling. Only the rivers of tears represented her scream, leaving the hurricane of sorrow lumped in the heart that her family had broken numerous times without their awareness unreleased. The crushing and suffocating pain in her heart was too hard for her to handle. She let the tears damped the bed to ease the heart crushing pain. Slowly, the eyes’ lids tightly stuck together after some time. Haruhi prayed multiple times, chanting it inside her brain so that she could sleep peacefully without the bad memories haunted her.
